Balance Tools

21st Century Static Balancing Tools

Formerly made by the Sundstrand Corporation, these tools are made in many different styles and shapes to handle a wide variety of precision balancing, straightening and truing operations.  All tools are fully portable with the exception of the extra heavy duty type BT-5.

SIMPLE OPERATION.  Imbalance is the uneven distribution of weight.  Static Balancing is a weighting process to detect the imbalance of a circular or cylindrical part which is free to turn on an axis.  A part to be balanced is placed on the four discs of the Balancing Tool.  An unbalanced part will rotate until the heavy side is downward.  Balance is accomplished by adding a counter weight to the lighter side, or by removing weight from the heavy side.  When the part remains motionless when placed in any position in 360 degrees, it is then in static balance.

STUHR balancing tools are made in eighteen different styles and sizes.  They can be used for balancing grinding wheels, fan blades, rotating cutting tools, pulleys, sheaves, and many other parts. Frames are cast iron and accurately machined to hold steel discs which are hardened and ground.  The discs revolve freely on steel balls running in hardened and ground races.  Chilled iron discs are used in larger units designed to carry heavy loads.

Section drawing above shows a typical mounting for a balancing tool disc with an integral hub – used in No’s.  BT-2A adjustable floor type, the BT-3 floor type, and the BT-8 adjustable floor type.

The smaller size tools – No’s. BT-10 super sensitive bench type, BT-1 standard bench type, BT-2 adjustable floor type,  BT-20 super sensitive floor type,  BT-8 adjustable floor type and BT-8A super sensitive adjustable floor type – have a retaining collar rather than the integral hub shown in the drawing.

The No’s. BT-4 floor type and the BT-5 extra heavy duty type balancing tools have unit ball bearings confined between retaining plates which correspond to the inner and outer races of the other tools.
